Inspiration as a communicator

An inspiration to me, as a communicator, is someone who is passionate about their words, confident in their own voice, and who carries sincerity in their tone. Lupita Nyong’o is someone who emulates just that, and someone I want to mirror as I communicate. She is not only an inspiration to me but an inspiration to many others as she provides hope and encouragement through her words.
Lupita doesn’t have to speak loudly or forcefully to get her point across. She instead is able to achieve this through her behaviors that portray sincerity. She uses stories from her own experiences, humor, analogies and references to paint pictures in her listener’s mind. She draws people in through her excellent transitions, steady voice and vulnerable reveals into her own experiences, hopes, empathy and emotion.
Her composure and light-heartedness are additional aspects that inspire me. Her speeches ignite hope in others and makes people want to go out and achieve anything they set their mind to. Her words come effortlessly, yet leave a lasting impression. Additionally, Lupita never pretends to be anything she isn’t and is not afraid to admit when she doesn’t know something. She is fearless. She is mindful.
As I communicate I want people to hear my words and feel something special. I want to convey hope just as Lupita does. She is wise beyond her years and her speeches illustrate that. One speech in particular that has stuck with me is her acceptance speech for best supporting actress at the 2014 Oscars. The emotion behind her voice and words translated directly into my own emotion. There was important meaning behind everything she said and the statement, “no matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid,” is just one of many lines in the speech that do just that.
Lupita communicates about important societal issues she believes in as well. She works towards making people believe that they are beautiful and worthy. This is something I want to convey as I communicate also. I want to create a difference through my words. I want to create change and inspire others. I want to emulate Lupita’s ability to grab an audience’s attention and make them feel exactly what she is saying. Her words communicate something special.
As I continue through school, I want to learn how to communicate in the effortless way that Lupita does. I want to mirror the artistry of her words and her capacity to ask questions and listen for answers. She allows failure to be an option, but doesn’t allow it to stop her. Lupita encourages her listeners to take risks as they dare to reach for what they want without expecting to be perfect. They should “always have perfection to work towards. It gives perspective.”
